Tip 46 – Using mobile phones when fuelling your vehicle A recent episode of a certain TV series claimed that stating the use of mobile phones whilst filling your car with fuel was a myth. They filmed their presenter soaking the inside of an old caravan in a remote site with a vast quantity of petrol. He then left his mobile phone on a saturated fabric seat. He retreated some considerable distance and then used a colleagues phone to call his phone leaving an unmanned TV camera showing his phone ringing and nothing happened. To emphasise the point he then collected about 12 phones from film and other crew and using another set of phones they each simultaneously called all of the phones. Once again nothing happened. What the programme failed to show was that it is only when the answer, or indeed any other button on the phone is pressed that the electrical spark, whilst minute is sufficient to cause an explosion with the vapour/fumes from the fuel.
