Can anything be done? A very valuable piece of information from Nigel is as follows: Sand Bags – These alone are unable to stem the ingress of water, at best they will filter the water flowing through them. To use effectively you must first lay heavy sheet plastic on the ground then place the sand bags on top of the plastic – build up the sand bags to the required height and then wrap the plastic around the front, (water side), of the bags and then place a row of sand bags on top of the plastic sheeting to keep it in place. Alternatively Aqua-Sac or FloodSax are effective.
