Is there anything that I can do to prevent my premium from increasing? There are many actions with little or no cost that can be done. Tip 50 – Improve your Flood defence As a great friend and business associate of mine, Nigel Dawkins, (Risk Management Consultant), recently wrote – “Another year, another flood, what was the exception is now fast becoming the norm!” For insurers to cope with the cost of covering “what is likely to happen” would be to change the whole principle of insurance which is intended to pay compensation for the unexpected and the resulting cost of all classes of insurance premiums would escalate by an extraordinary amount which quite frankly I don’t believe people and businesses would be able to tolerate. Can anything be done? A very valuable piece of information from Nigel is as follows: Sand Bags – These alone are unable to stem the ingress of water, at best they will filter the water flowing through them. To use effectively you must first lay heavy sheet plastic on the ground then place the sand bags on top of the plastic – build up the sand bags to the required height and then wrap the plastic around the front, (water side), of the bags and then place a row of sand bags on top of the plastic sheeting to keep it in place. Alternatively Aqua-Sac or FloodSax are effective. A range of BSI Kite approved products include flood barriers, backflow valves & automatic closing airbricks Always remember – call us to discuss any/every incident. We will advise and guide you.
